The Shenzhen Lianhua Peak Restroom project is a demonstration of China's Public Toilet Revolution, an initiative first proposed by UNICEF to improve toilet hygiene in developing countries. The restroom is strategically located next to Xiaoping Square, a political, cultural, and natural iconic area in Shenzhen. The challenge was to break the public's perception of traditional toilets, integrate the architecture with nature, solve the toilet problem for tens of millions of tourists, and provide a space for public activities and rest.
The unique feature of this project is its harmonious integration with the natural surroundings. The rest corridor connects the men's and women's toilets, forming a visual corridor between the square and the mountain forest. The main walls are fully open, allowing the scenery and natural wind into the room. An art perforated plate serves as a visual barrier to protect privacy while adding a cultural atmosphere to the square.
The realization of this design involved the use of concrete, steel, stone, Velux skylight, perforated aluminum plate, U-shaped glass, and a metal mesh curtain. The gross built area is 950 square meters, and the structure materials are concrete and steel. The design was initiated in May 2018 and completed in May 2019.
The design team, including Xiao Cheng, Yang Yang, Li Wen, He Shunpeng, Mo Suicong, Qi Xiao, and Zhang Yuanpeng, has successfully created a public space that not only serves its primary function but also enhances the cultural and aesthetic value of the location. The design takes advantage of the geographical location on the top of the hill to achieve maximum natural ventilation. Through evenly distributed openings, the monsoon is introduced, forming a comfortable low-temperature airflow under the roof shade.
Shenzhen Huahui Design's innovative approach to public toilets has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2021, a prestigious award given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
